The ASEAN Kendo Tournament will be held October 2010. Selections for team will take place sometime in June or July (date to be confirmed).
Club members (Surabaya, Medan, Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta) are advised to start practicing regularly. Your attendance record will be considered during selection (you will likely be rejected if the only time you show up for kendo is during selection - unless you are Musashi reborn).

Selections are complete and the full list of expected participants has been emailed out by Marcel-sempai.
Now to the nitty-gritty. Those persons that will be participating are reminded of the following:
1. The trip expense is per individual as there is no news of any sponsor nor is there expected to be any. Like almost all other clubs globally, tournament expenses are the responsibility of those that are selected AND will participate. Indonesia, at this time, IS NO EXCEPTION. Therefore, please be reminded that you will need to prepare ticket, hotel, and miscellaneous expense money for this trip.
2. Please make sure that if you DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH SHINAI, you MUST purchase them or have them prepared before you leave. Do your best to take 3 shinai with you, but 2 ARE REQUIRED. No one will loan you their shinai if you are negligent in this. Shinai MUST MEET THE WEIGHT AND LENGTH REQUIREMENTS FOR EACH GROUP (MALE/FEMALE). You will also be expected to know how to disassemble and assemble your shinai for any maintenance. If you do not know how, there are guides available for download through this site, or ask your seniors and practice at home.
3. Further reference to shinai: Please also make sure that the leather tip of your shinai is NOT WORN OUT. THE THICKNESS MAY BE MEASURED FOR SAFETY.
4. Please make sure that your bogu is in proper order. If you have any parts that need replacing, please speak to your seniors immediately so that they can try to arrange a replacement part.
5. LEARN TO TIE YOUR BOGU HIMO PROPERLY. Do not embarrass your dojo and sensei by being sloppy.
6. Locate on this site, and download the RULES FOR SHIAI. Learn them, especially those of you not in Jakarta. There is nothing more embarrassing for a club than a kendoka that can't even remember basic shiai rules. Also do your best to understand the Japanese terms for shiai.
These are the basic things that you need to do in order to prepare for the ASEAN Taikai.
Additional Items:
A. JKA members selected for ASEAN must come to practice more than 1 time per week. You are expected to show up to Sari Pan Pacific as often as possible. Failure to prepare for the tournament will result in poor performance of your team. Team members should push "no shows" to come or speak to the sensei if they refuse. Team members should "police" one another
B. The earlier you book your ticket, the cheaper it is. This will be especially important for non-JKA members. Please check with your local travel agent or online for ticket prices.
C. The hotel has been announced. Team members will be staying at the Paramount Hotel, Singapore. For team members not traveling together, please note that you will need to first know where the hotel is, and second know how to get there. From Changi Airport you can take bus, MRT, or taxi to the hotel. If you are traveling with a small group, there is a group taxi you can take (max 7 passengers) at a cost of S$7 per person (Rp50,000). MRT is accessible from Terminal 2 (you can take the airport monorail from either Terminal 1 or 3). Cost for the MRT is about S$2 (Rp13,000) per person. It is not recommended to take the bus if you are not familiar with the Singapore bus system. Marcel-sempai is still waiting for the hotel room rate from Singapore Kendo.
D. Some airlines charge for baggage. Please make sure you are aware if the airline you take charges or not. If they do, please make sure that you inform your travel agent that you will be taking luggage (about 15kg). Examples of airlines that charge for luggage are Air Asia, Tiger Airways. If you are booking online, please do not forget to select the baggage option (15kg should suffice). It is recommended you take 3 bags - one for check-in (your bogu and other kendo related items), one for your shinai, and one carry on bag. Remember, the baggage restriction for all airlines is between 15kg - 20kg - THIS IS NOT A PER BAG ALLOWANCE, BUT TOTAL WEIGHT. Pack light for your check-in bag and pack your other clothes into your carry on bag. You are only going for 2 or 3 nights and days, most of which will be spent in kendogi.
E. What to pack: 1 or 2 pairs of long pants plus a dress shirt for men (women should pack something suitable for the welcome and farewell dinner). Light clothes like shorts and t-shirts. Toiletry like toothpaste, toothbrush, any special items (REMEMBER TO KEEP ALL GELS AND LIQUIDS UNDER 100ML IF YOU PACK THIS INTO YOUR CARRY-ON), etc. Obviously your kendogi, bogu, shinai, and boken (if you plan to grade).
F. If you will be grading, know what grade you are testing for and what is expected. Practice these during keiko. If you are not sure, ask your sensei. We hope that everyone that is going to Singapore will take the opportunity to grade as chances for AJKF/FIK grading are limited. Please note that whatever grade you received locally is NOT AN OFFICIAL GRADE for FIK purposes. This means that if you have shodan locally, you will only be able to grade for a kyu-level (this is the current information to date - please check with Marcel-sempai if there has been any change). The kyu-level grading rule will be in effect even if you have a local nidan. However, please do not let this discourage you as it is ONLY A FORMALITY and a step to further official grading until such time that IKA is a member of FIK, someday. This is not a reflection of your skill but rather a regulatory issue that is out of our control. If you do not grade for the kyu grade, you will always have this issue, regardless of how high you go locally. Singapore Kendo is very strict about this.
G. Also related to grading: Grading is not free. Please check with JKA for information regarding price. Fee is grade dependant, so higher grades will pay a higher fee.
H. ONE FINAL AND MOST IMPORTANT NOTE: MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A PASSPORT THAT IS VALID FOR AT LEAST 6 MONTHS PRIOR TO YOUR DEPARTURE. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN POSSIBLY BEING DENIED EXIT FROM INDONESIA OR WORSE, ENTRY INTO SINGAPORE. WHETHER YOU NEED TO GET A PASSPORT OR RENEW YOUR EXISTING PASSPORT, PLEASE DO SO NOW AS IT TAKES TIME.
