Just learned of a good way to prepare your shinai for use.
Generally speaking most practice shinai are ready for use out of the bag, but if you have any shinai that have not been used for a long time and you feel the bamboo may be dry, then the following will help to restore your shinai.
1) boil vegetable or corn oil until hot. Let the oil cool before use. 2) pour or brush the oil over your shinai (there is no need to disassemble the shinai but for obvious reasons, remove all the leather pieces and the string). Make sure to get oil on both sides of the shinai (pouring oil into the holes will help). 3) wipe away any excess oil. If you brushed on the oil, there will not be much excess. 4) wrap your shinai in plastic wrap (the stuff you use for wrapping food) and then store your shinai.
I would suggest at least 3 days before using your shinai. Longer should be no problem.
Disclaimer: I am not responsible if your shinai breaks during or after you have oiled it. This is provided as information only and it is up to your adult self to decide if you want to use what is provided.

Just a question, why boil vegetable or corn oil until hot but then let the oil cool before use? why not use it right away?
Thanks

Some oils may contain eggs from small insects or parasites. Boiling the oil kills them.
